Sivananda Yoga

What it is

Each class follows the same structure: breathing exercises, a warm-up sequence of gentle sun-facing stretches, then twelve set postures — starting with a headstand and finishing with a twist — with a short rest between each one.

Technique

Breath leads the class. You’re guided into a slow, audible breathing style through the nose, which sets the pace for the sun-facing warm-up and carries through into the postures themselves. Movement is timed to the breath — one breath in, one movement out.

Postures are held, not rushed — long enough for the muscle to actually release, not just stretch. Between each posture, you rest flat on your back for a moment. That’s built into the sequence, not optional — it’s where your nervous system settles before the next posture asks something of it.

Benefits

flexibility

Flexibility

The full sequence works the spine in every direction: forward, back, sideways, twisted

circulation

Circulation

Upside-down and backward-bending postures move blood flow in ways upright movement doesn’t reach

strength

Strength

Postures like the headstand and the backbend build core and back strength through held tension, not repetition

nervoussystemregulation

Nervous System Regulation

The rest built into every posture lowers your heart rate and steadies your breath before it has a chance to spike
